~ BIG ~

I am sometimes puzzled by some of the ch0ices that humans make. Like why I like Johnny Depp than Brad Pitt..heheh..thats irrelevant! Just making small talk. What I am trying to say is..why did the resident of this house bought a car that big when he doesnt have ample parking space ? Look at how that gigantic car / pickup truck blocks his front door..or rather his whole house. Hmmm, why are we fascinated with big things? In fairness.., its a cool car!

" for Indonesia "

I am already late for this.., since I havent been paying attention to the news.
Today's post is dedicated to the poor people affected by the quake in Indonesia. There is really nothing I can do individually but to pray for you and hope for a speedy recovery. Nature can really be ferocious at times and best we can do is to pick up the pieces of the damage, especially ourselves and move on.

Sorry , Im not good at this !!

auto-bikes

They call these otobai (auto-bikes) here, motorsiklo ( motorcycles) back home. I wanted to take photos of it speeding down the streets but I dont have any luck to catch them on action. Simply put., before I manage to take my camera out of my purse, they're already very far away.
These are simple ones, hope I get to picture the unique ones sometime.

for the blind

Almost all sidewalks here in Japan has this yellow line for the blind people. I saw on tv that they are developing a special walking stick /cane that has a computer chip inside that will cause the cane to vibrate if its the end of the sidewalk or where they should turn. Is there something like this on your city?

abandoned

During my photo hunting expedition, saw a dubious path once again. Thinking I might find a good thing to shoot I followed the path and this old house welcomed me. It looked adandoned so decided to prowl around when I saw an elderly couple having tea inside. They didnt see me so I hurriedly left, I dont wanna be arrested for trespassing,oh no! So sorry if I just shot from this side.

This beautiful flower brightens up the somewhat lonely looking garden of this old traditional japanese house. If you are wondering.., no I didnt lie on the ground when I shot this. The house was on a small hill.

planting time

Planting season is here in my town. Not only are the farmers busy with planting the famous akita komachi rice but also my neighbors. Saw this plant garage sale (?) on my way home from work. Ahh, if only I have a small patch of land to cultivate . Heres one more shot of people deciding what to buy.

future artists

One of the things I love about this country is the way they support their youth. In sports, in academic and even in arts. This is the sidewalk outside the sports complex. Where else to display the city's future artist's work but on the streets where everybody can see. This road goes a long way and so are the drawings!

Anyway, starting today Im on my much anticipated vacation so you are seeing this post because of the kindness of Lisi from HongKong. She will be posting for me until the 27'th of this month.

model house

I always pass by this house when I go to the library. They are advertising it as an " american house ", just look at the flag! Is that so? I havent been to the U.S but thought I've seen this kind of houses on american movies. I like the color mostly because houses here are gray . The new generation are starting to build colorful houses so Im happy! But I still miss the white houses back home.

~ lunch ~

light lunch

Japans fastfood chains have been suffering costumer decline lately partly because younger people have become more health conscious. So instead of the common hamburger and fries , they've come up with new healthy ideas. One of my favorite is the " mos burger ". Had mustard chicken with burdock root and lotus , then fresh vegetable salad for lunch yesterday . I also like it that if you dine in your food is not served in plastic or styrofoam (?) . My tea is not served on paper cups. Environmental-friendly, no?!

" tai-yaki "

One of Japans most loved sweets...tai-yaki . Tai ( mackerel?) shaped cakes with sweetened bean paste inside. There are new variations now aside from beans like custard cream, green tea flavored cream and even chocolate. I personally prefer the all time favorite...sweet beans.

lunch ??

I was waiting for my bus ( yesterday ) when this 3 salary men ( thats what they call employees ) passed by. I saw that they came from a nearby convenience store and Im guessing, nah, Im sure that they bought lunch there. This is around 12:30 noon. Just look what they are carrying! Lunch boxes are called " obento " and you can buy them at supermarkets, convenience stores and there are even obento only stores. Wives usually make obento for their husbands and kids, so do I. hehehe! Its either they're single men or one of those lazy days for wives. ( happens to me ,too! )
Well, it was just another ordinary day here.

~ gate 城門 ~

entrance gate to the castle grounds

The entrance gate to the castle grounds of the former Kubota Castle in Akita City. Akita was ruled by the feudal Lord Satake and his family for about 270 years. The moat and zigzag stone stairways show that the castle was also used as a military facility in those days. Now, the place is called Senshu Park and is a place for relaxation to the citizens and a tourist attraction during the seasonal changes in the scenery.

~ omonogashira - gobansho ~

The " omonogashira-gobansho " is the only building remaining which was built in the Kubota Castle in Edo era. It was used as an office of the guards who had duties of defending the castle . Repaired by the city in 1988, we can now see it in its original condition. Located just below the gate to the castle grounds. I will show you the gate tomorrow.

~ ancient look-out ~

osumi-yagura

" Osumi-yagura " tower of the former Kubota Castle. Osumi-yagura literally means a look-out or a guard house and warehouse built at every corner of the bailey. There used to be 8 towers in the " Kubota Castle " in the time of Lord Satake. All was lost but in 1989 this one tower was restored by the city on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of municipalization. Small by todays standards but since its on top of a small mountain, the guards have a whole view of the city.

I will show you the tower in my next post, meanwhile heres another shot of Akita City. Please click pictures for a larger view.

Weird.., strange., I think it all depends on how one person sees things. How he feels about it! I have nothing bad to say on some weird things people do. What may look absurd and questionable to me might be what is normal to others. I.., maybe ??? to some too. So if the owner of this building sees this blog, Im not saying what you've done to your house ..,particularly your roof is strange ... or unneccessary! I'd say unique?! How about you guys??
By the way , its a " soba " or buckwheat noodle shop, too.

Opps, Im sorry! I said yesterday's set was the last but I just have to post this! Are they cute or not??! Yes, the sakura festival also featured many aspiring local artists and well, dancers. I think everyday there was a different show.
Well, sakura season is almost over and their cute, fragile petals are gradually falling to the ground. A little sad but hey.., thats why this season is very special! We can enjoy it for just a very short time!

demise " 出店 "

food stalls ( 出店 )
Mostly all flower viewers bring their picnic boxes full of food and drinks. But hanami here in Akita's Senshu Park would not be merrier without the various "demise " or food stalls. It sounds bad when you read it in english ,huh. ( hehehe) Actually its pronounced "de- mee - se". From rice cakes, to barbecues, candies and chocolate coated bananas, and other delectable food.
There are some more photos , so please click here and enjoy !

Trivia: Hordes of people who wants to enjoy " yozakura " or night sakura sends two or more ahead ( mostly company parties) from early in the morning to reserve a place for their night time party. The early ones gets the best spots, of course! This park would be full of merry , alcohol intoxicated people by night.

After your hanami, you can immediately visit Rodney in Aliso Viejo, California.
