kanto matsuri



beautiful kanto lighting the dark skies

Tiers of lanterns light up the night sky during the 3 ~ 6th of August. Lanterns that symbolizes ears of rice are lit and hung on bamboo poles , called kanto. These are skillfully carried and manipulated by men who parade among excited spectators. This year there were 260 kanto's paraded and the heaviest of this poles weight about 50 kilos. There are kiddie kantos too for young men ...or boys. The female participants of this " matsuri " are incharge with the taiko drums and bamboo flutes which produces the enigmatic and energizing music for this fest.
